Bespoke Timber Portico with Columns in Lincoln

We were asked to design, manufacture and install a bespoke timber portico at this property in Lincoln. The existing entrance lacked presence and required a more substantial architectural feature to suit the building. The new portico was purpose made to create a balanced and well-proportioned entrance. We designed the structure with clean classical detailing, including square columns, a deep fascia, and a moulded crown to give the entrance more depth and definition. Getting these proportions right is key, especially on period-style properties where the joinery needs to look original rather than added later.

Timber Portico Construction

For this project, the portico was manufactured using a combination of Sapele hardwood and exterior grade plywood. The solid sections and mouldings were formed from Sapele, providing durability and a crisp finish, while the structural elements were built using high quality sheet materials for stability and efficiency.

This method allows us to create strong, long-lasting external joinery while maintaining traditional detailing. All components were machined in our workshop and assembled to ensure accuracy before finishing.

Preparation and Finishing

All end grain was fully sealed prior to finishing to reduce moisture ingress. The joinery was then spray primed to provide a consistent base coat across all surfaces and moulded sections. This helps improve paint adhesion and contributes to a longer-lasting external finish.

Installation on Site

The portico was installed on site and carefully aligned so the columns sat square and true. The roof section was securely fixed back to the building, creating a solid and durable structure. Attention was given to ensuring all joints were tight and the overall installation sat cleanly against the existing property.
