Listed Building Temporary Safety Handrail in Lincoln
We installed a listed building safety handrail in Lincoln at this Grade II* listed property in Minster Yard, close to Lincoln Cathedral.
The client needed a temporary handrail to make the main staircase safer to use following hip and knee replacement surgery. Because of the historic importance of the building, the work had to be practical, discreet and carefully considered.
This project forms part of our heritage and period joinery in Lincoln service as well as our wider bespoke joinery services in Lincoln.
Listed Building Safety Handrail in Lincoln
The property is a Grade II* listed building in uphill Lincoln, facing Lincoln Cathedral. It contains a historic central entrance hall staircase with traditional joinery details including an open well stair, turned newel, ramped handrail and stick balusters.
The brief was to provide a temporary safety rail that helped the occupant safely access the upper floor. While keeping the impact on the historic interior as low as possible.
Hardwood Mopstick Handrail with Aged Brass Brackets
We supplied and fitted a hardwood mopstick handrail using aged brass brackets. The style was chosen to sit quietly within the existing interior rather than look like a modern, heavy-handed addition.
The handrail was installed in three sections with seven wall brackets. We used the minimum fixings needed to make the rail safe and secure.
Temporary and Reversible Heritage Joinery Work
For this listed building safety handrail in Lincoln, reversibility was an important part of the approach. The handrail was designed as a temporary installation and can be removed in the future when it is no longer required.
Once removed, the affected areas can be repaired by someone experienced in listed buildings, lime mortar and traditional repair methods.
This type of project shows how heritage buildings can be adapted carefully when safety or accessibility becomes a concern. Without permanently changing the character of the property.
Radial Joinery works on listed buildings and period properties in Lincoln, including traditional doors, windows, mouldings, repairs and sympathetic joinery alterations.
