Radial Joinery manufactured and installed bespoke timber windows and a purpose-made Sapele hardwood back door for this traditional cottage in Stubton, near Newark.
The project included two double-glazed flush casement windows and one external back door, all designed around the existing openings and character of the property.
The new joinery was manufactured in our Lincoln workshop before being spray finished and installed at the cottage. It combines a traditional appearance with improved insulation, security and long-term durability.
Bespoke Timber Windows Near Newark
The existing windows needed replacing, but standard manufactured products would not have suited the proportions or appearance of the cottage.
We measured the openings and manufactured two bespoke timber windows specifically for the property. This allowed the frame dimensions, opening arrangements and glazing details to be designed around the building rather than relying on standard sizes.
The windows were constructed as flush casements. With this design, the opening sash sits level with the surrounding frame when closed, producing a traditional appearance suitable for cottages and period properties.

Sapele Hardwood Window Construction
We manufactured the window frames and opening casements using Sapele hardwood. Sapele is a durable and stable timber commonly used for purpose-made external joinery.
Its machining qualities allow accurate joints, profiles and frame components to be produced while providing a suitable surface for a high-quality painted finish.
Each window was manufactured and assembled in our workshop, allowing us to check the fit, operation and detailing before the finished joinery was transported to the property.
Double Glazing and Thermal Performance
The windows were fitted with Pilkington clear toughened double-glazed units. Each unit used a 4/16/4 construction, creating an overall sealed-unit thickness of 24mm.
The glazing specification included:
- Clear toughened safety glass
- Argon-filled cavities
- Warm-edge spacer bars
- Weather-sealed installation
This specification improves insulation and everyday comfort while allowing the new windows to retain the proportions and appearance required for the cottage.
Purpose-Made Sapele Back Door
Alongside the windows, we manufactured a bespoke external back door and matching frame using Sapele hardwood.
The door was designed for the existing opening rather than adapted from a standard product. This gave us control over its size, construction, proportions and relationship with the surrounding building.

Multipoint Security and Traditional Ironmongery
The back door was fitted with a multipoint locking system to provide modern security and reliable everyday operation.
Black antique-style ironmongery was selected to complement the appearance of the cottage. Matching black handles and stays were also fitted to the opening window casements.
This combination allowed the windows and door to benefit from modern performance without introducing ironmongery that looked unsuitable for the property.
Workshop-Applied Spray Finish
All the joinery was prepared and spray finished in our Lincoln workshop before installation.
The finishing process included end-grain sealing and two coats of primer before the final colour coats were spray applied. Preparing and finishing the joinery in controlled workshop conditions produces a smooth, consistent coating and protects vulnerable areas before the windows and door reach the property.
The windows were finished in Natural Calico. The back door was finished grey externally and Natural Calico internally to coordinate with the cottage and its interior.
Installation at the Stubton Cottage
Once manufacture and finishing were complete, we installed the windows, back door and frame at the property in Stubton.
Purpose-made joinery is particularly useful for cottages and older buildings because existing openings are not always completely square or available in standard dimensions. Careful measuring and workshop manufacture allowed each unit to be made for its individual opening.
The finished installation provides:

- A bespoke Sapele hardwood back door and frame
- Improved thermal performance
- Multipoint door security
- Traditional-style ironmongery
- A durable workshop-applied painted finish

Traditional Joinery for Period Properties
