Radial Joinery designed, manufactured and installed these bespoke Accoya external doors for a property in Branston near Lincoln.
The project involved a pair of glazed double doors made specifically for the existing opening. Large glazed panels increased the natural light entering the room, while traditional proportions and lower timber panels helped the doors sit comfortably within the property.
This project forms part of our bespoke timber door service in Lincoln. Every door was manufactured in our Lincoln workshop before being installed and adjusted on site.
Bespoke Glazed Double Doors in Branston
The existing opening required doors made to its individual dimensions rather than a standard manufactured size. We designed the complete arrangement around the available opening, the surrounding windows and how the doors would be used.
The finished design included:
- A pair of purpose-made external double doors
- Large glazed upper sections
- Traditional lower timber panels
- Double-glazed toughened glass
- Purpose-made timber mouldings
- Traditional-style ironmongery
- A secure mortice locking system
Making the doors specifically for the property allowed the glazing, panels and timber sections to be carefully proportioned rather than being restricted by standard door sizes.
Accoya Timber for External Doors
We manufactured the doors using Accoya timber. Radial Joinery is an Accoya Approved Manufacturer, and we regularly use Accoya for painted external windows and doors.
Accoya offers excellent dimensional stability and resistance to timber decay. Its reduced movement is particularly useful for external doors because seasonal changes in temperature and moisture can affect how conventional timber opens and closes.
Good stability helps the doors retain more consistent margins around the frame and reduces unnecessary pressure on the hinges, locks, glazing and painted finish.
Accoya can also be machined using traditional joinery methods, allowing us to produce bespoke mouldings, panel details and door sections while retaining the long-term benefits of the timber.
Designed Around the Existing Opening
The proportions of glazed external doors have an important effect on both the outside appearance of the property and the amount of light entering the room.
For this project, the glazed sections were designed to align comfortably with the surrounding property. Lower flat panels provided a traditional base to the doors without unnecessarily reducing the glazed area.
Before manufacture, the opening and required clearances were considered carefully. This allowed the doors, frame, glazing and ironmongery to be developed as one complete installation.
Double Glazing and Natural Light
The doors were fitted with toughened double-glazed units incorporating argon-filled cavities and warm-edge spacer bars.
The large glazed sections created a much brighter connection between the interior and garden. They also gave the room a more open appearance and provided a clear view through the doors.
Using sealed double-glazed units improved the thermal performance of the new joinery while retaining a design appropriate for the property.
The glazing specification, timber sections and panel sizes were considered together to produce balanced doors with suitable strength and performance.
Purpose-Made Mouldings and Joinery Details
All the timber components were manufactured in our Lincoln workshop. This included producing the required door mouldings in-house using custom tooling.
Purpose-made mouldings allow the profile, depth and proportions of the detailing to be controlled throughout the design. This is particularly useful when standard mouldings would look too heavy, too modern or unsuitable for the surrounding property.

Traditional Ironmongery and Door Security
The completed doors were fitted with pewter-finish hinges and cranked bolts selected to complement their traditional appearance.
A five-lever mortice sash lock provided the main locking point. The ironmongery was positioned and fitted during manufacture so each component could be checked before the doors were installed.
The choice of hinges, bolts, handles and locks is considered as part of the complete door specification. This helps ensure that the ironmongery suits the weight, construction and intended use of the doors.
Installation and Final Adjustment
Once manufacture was complete, we installed the doors at the property in Branston.
The doors were carefully fitted and adjusted to create clean margins, smooth operation and reliable engagement with the locks and bolts. The glazing and surrounding joinery were also checked as part of the installation.
The completed double doors allow considerably more natural light into the room while providing modern glazing and security. Their traditional proportions and purpose-made detailing help them sit naturally within the property.
