Bespoke arched timber window and match boarding installation in Nettleham, Lincoln.

Overview

Radial Joinery manufactured and installed this bespoke arched timber window and matching timber boarding for a commercial property at Deepdale Enterprise Park in Nettleham, near Lincoln.

The existing window and materials beneath it required replacement. The new joinery needed to follow the distinctive arched opening, complement the building and meet current performance and Building Regulations requirements.

This project forms part of our bespoke timber windows in Lincoln service and demonstrates how purpose-made joinery can be designed for an unusual opening that cannot be served by a standard window.

Designing a Window for an Arched Opening

The shape and arrangement of the existing opening determined the design of the replacement window. We produced a purpose-made archtop frame with a directly glazed curved section above four lower stormproof window sections.

Two of the lower sashes were made to open, while the other two were fixed. This arrangement provided practical ventilation while maintaining balanced proportions across the complete window.

Careful site measurement and templating were important because the new frame needed to follow the existing arched opening accurately. The recorded dimensions were then used to manufacture the window in our Lincoln workshop.

Sapele Hardwood Construction

We manufactured the frame, opening sashes and surrounding timber details from Sapele hardwood. Sapele offers the strength, stability and durability required for external joinery and can be machined accurately for shaped and non-standard components.

Manufacturing the complete window in our workshop gave us control over the curved head, joints, sash arrangement, glazing preparation and overall fit before the unit was taken to site.

Double Glazing and Ventilation

The new window was fitted with Pilkington 4/12/4 double-glazed units. These included argon-filled cavities and warm-edge spacer bars to improve thermal performance.

Trickle vents were incorporated to provide the required background ventilation. The completed installation was inspected and signed off by the local authority for compliance with the applicable Building Regulations requirements.

The glazing and ventilation specification allowed the new window to provide modern performance while retaining the distinctive shape and appearance required for the building.

Timber Match Boarding and Sub-Cill

The work also included replacement timber boarding beneath the window. We manufactured and fitted new V-grooved match boarding from Sapele, together with a purpose-made sub-cill detail.

Using the same timber for the window and boarding created a consistent result and provided a durable replacement for the failed materials.

The boarding was left unfinished so it could be decorated on site to match the surrounding building.

Structural Repairs Behind the Boarding

Once the existing cladding was removed, failed materials were found within the structure behind it. These needed to be addressed before the new boarding could be installed.

We replaced the affected components with new studwork, OSB and a breathable membrane. Completing these repairs provided a sound backing structure and helped protect the new external joinery.

This illustrates why replacement joinery projects sometimes reveal additional work after defective coverings have been removed. Dealing with the underlying problem is essential if the finished installation is to perform correctly.

Manufactured in Lincoln and Installed in Nettleham

The window and match boarding were manufactured in our Lincoln workshop before being installed at Deepdale Enterprise Park.

Workshop manufacture allowed the shaped components to be prepared accurately, while our on-site work covered removal, structural repairs, fitting, glazing and final adjustment.

Our joinery installation service supports the work we manufacture by ensuring that unusual windows and surrounding components are fitted as intended.

The completed project replaced the failed window and boarding with a coordinated Sapele installation designed specifically for the building.
