Timber Windows Lincoln – Yorkshire Sash Window Replacement in Hackthorn
This project involved the repair and replacement of timber windows in Lincolnshire at a listed property in Hackthorn. The existing Yorkshire sliding sash windows had rot in the sashes, cills and jambs, so new timber sections were required. Work like this forms part of our timber windows Lincoln service, as well as our wider joinery services in Lincoln where we repair and manufacture traditional external joinery.
Each window had two sliding sashes which needed replacing. In addition, we fitted new timber cills and repaired damaged jamb sections. Repairs like this are common on older buildings across Lincolnshire, especially where the original timber windows need to stay in place.
Timber Windows Lincoln – Matching Original Yorkshire Sash Profiles
To keep the correct appearance, the new sashes had to match the original windows exactly. Therefore, we produced custom cutters to copy the existing mouldings and glazing bar profiles. This method allows the new timber windows to look the same as the originals, which is important on period and listed properties. Because of this, the work also forms part of our heritage and period joinery in Lincoln service.
We first took templates on site in Hackthorn. After that, the new sashes were made in the workshop so the sizes and details stayed accurate. Making the joinery in the workshop also helps ensure the timber windows fit correctly when installed.
Sapele Timber Used for External Timber Windows
We made the new sashes, cills and repair sections from Sapele timber. This hardwood is strong, stable and well suited for external timber windows. As a result, the finished joinery is more durable while still keeping the traditional look.
All parts were manufactured in the workshop and then primed ready for painting. However, final decoration was not included because the Hackthorn estate has its own painting team. Even so, the joinery was fully prepared so it could be finished without extra work.
Traditional Glazing for Timber Window Repair
All glass was replaced during the repair. We fitted the new glazing using traditional putty pointing so the windows kept their original appearance. This method is often required when repairing timber windows on heritage buildings.
In addition, we fitted brush seals around the sliding sashes. This helps reduce draughts while still keeping the original Yorkshire sash design. As a result, the windows perform better without changing the outside look.
